Belching - What Is It?

While belching or burping is more of a symptom than a condition, it can be both physically uncomfortable and cause for socially awkward circumstances. Belching is a reflex that expels gas from the stomach through the mouth. Belching during or after meals is a typical behaviour and in some cultures, belching during a meal is actually considered polite.

While belching is normal, frequent belching may indicate a larger issue such as a hiatal hernia or GERD (Gastroesophageal reflux disease).

Anything that increases swallowing may actually increase belching as more air enters the digestive system. This may involve things like eating too fast, smoking and, of course, carbonated beverages that not only cause more frequently swallowing but also contain gaseous contents.

What are the symptoms of Belching?

There are more causes of belching than there are symptoms. Raw foods such as bran, raw fruits, vegetables which may produce gas are contributing factors. Along with soda, beer, seltzer water and champagne. Some juices can also lead to belching.

Swallowing too much air, a condition known as aerophaiga can also contribute and may be associated with eathing or drinking too fast or talking while eating. Antacids may also be a triggering factor for belching or burping, as well as indigestion.

Belching in infants is also quite normal and encouraged as it is important to expel air in the stomach that may have been ingested with formular or milk.

If belching does not cause genuine discomfort it is probably normal. Conversely, if belching does not relieve discomfort, larger issues may play a role and a physician's advice should be sought.

Belching Home Remedies

Home remedies for belching or burping are many. Starting a meal with soup before a main helps the body prepare for digestion and thereby help minimize belching.

Herbal teas are also remedial as they again assist with the digestive process. Among these, consider mint, chamomile, blackberry or raspberry. And lemon tea mixed with a touch of apple cider vinegar.

Most home remedies for belching provide fairly instant relief and accordingly, further attention is rarely necessary. For an instantaneous belching home remedy, a glass of water mixed with a half teaspoon of baking soda should do the trick.
